A practical guide to choosing a kit, inspecting a box before purchase, and conserving and displaying finished aircraft and ship models.

Collecting finished scale models begins with the kit itself: choose a subject and scale you can build and store, then inspect the box before money changes hands. Once built, the model needs stable light, controlled dust, and a case that fits its wingspan or hull. The three stages, kit choice, pre-purchase assessment, and conservation, decide whether a collection lasts or slowly degrades.
Choosing a kit for a finished collection
A finished collection is only as coherent as the kits that feed it. The first decision is scale, because mixing 1/72 aircraft with 1/48 and 1/32 on the same shelf makes comparison difficult and storage unpredictable. 1/72 remains the common scale for aircraft 1903 to 1918, for helicopters, and for many floatplanes, and it keeps a large collection within a manageable footprint. Ship builders face a different logic: wooden hulls and rigging demand more space per unit, so a small number of larger ships often reads better than a crowded shelf of small ones.
Subject matter matters as much as size. Early aviation, 1903 to 1918, offers fragile-looking machines with wire bracing and open cockpits, and the kits tend to be small and lightly detailed. Helicopters and floatplanes introduce rotors, floats, and struts that are easy to break after assembly, which makes them poor candidates for open shelving. Historical replicas reward research: a specific airframe, squadron, or hull number gives the finished model a documentary value that a generic scheme does not.
Beginners should start with a kit that has few parts, positive fit, and a single colour scheme. Vintage kits are a separate category. They can be cheap and historically interesting, but they often carry raised panel lines, soft detail, and decals that have aged badly. A collector who wants a finished model rather than a project should treat vintage kits as a specialist interest, not a default.

How do you assess a box before buying?
A box is a promise, and the inspection is where that promise is tested. Start with the box itself: crushed corners, water stains, and sun-faded panels suggest storage problems that may extend to the plastic. A sealed box is not automatically a good box, because the contents cannot be checked, but an opened box lets you verify what is actually inside.
Check the parts count against the instruction sheet. Missing sprues are common in second-hand kits, and a single absent tree can make the model unbuildable. Look at the clear parts: canopies and windows are often the first items to yellow, crack, or go missing. Decals deserve close attention. Old decals can be brittle, yellowed, or out of register, and aftermarket replacements may not exist for an obscure subject. Photo-etched parts, resin accessories, and metal barrels are frequently removed from boxes and sold separately, so confirm they are present if the listing claims them.
Photographs are the next tool. Ask for images of the sprues, not just the box art, and look for short shots, heavy flash, and sink marks. A photograph of the decal sheet against a white background will show yellowing that a casual snapshot hides. For vintage kits, compare the moulding against references: reissues often share the same box art but differ in plastic quality and decal content.
Finally, decide what you are buying. A kit that will be built once and displayed has different requirements from a kit kept as a collectible. If the goal is a finished model, minor box wear is irrelevant and part completeness is everything. If the goal is a sealed collectible, the box condition is the object, and the plastic inside is secondary.
What criteria decide whether to keep a model?
Not every finished model earns shelf space. The first criterion is execution: a clean build with aligned struts, tidy rigging, and a consistent finish will hold up to close viewing, while a model with silvered decals and visible seams will not. The second is accuracy. A model that represents a specific aircraft or ship, with correct markings and proportions, carries more information than a generic one, and information is what a collection is for.
Scale and subject coherence come next. A shelf of 1/72 aircraft from 1903 to 1918 reads as a deliberate collection; a random mix of scales and eras reads as accumulation. Condition is the third criterion. Finished models are fragile, and a model that has already lost a propeller blade, a rotor, or a mast is unlikely to survive another move. Repair is possible, but a repaired model should be judged on the repair as much as the original build.
Sentiment is a legitimate criterion, but it should be named as such. A first build, a gift, or a model bought on a specific trip may stay for reasons that have nothing to do with accuracy or condition. The practical rule is to separate the documentary collection from the personal one, and to store or display them differently.
Conserving and displaying the built model
Conservation starts with light. Ultraviolet light fades paint, yellows clear parts, and degrades decals, so a display case should not sit in direct sun. If the room has strong daylight, consider UV-filtering acrylic or glass, or move the case to a wall that receives indirect light. Heat is the second enemy: attics and garages swing in temperature, which stresses glue joints and can warp thin plastic and wooden hulls.
Dust is the third. Open shelving exposes models to household dust, which settles into rigging, rotor heads, and cockpit interiors and is difficult to remove without damage. A closed case, whether acrylic or glass, solves most of the problem. Acrylic is lighter and less likely to break, but it scratches easily; glass is heavier and clearer but requires more careful handling. In both cases, depth matters: a case should have enough clearance for the tallest mast or the widest wingspan, with a few centimetres of air around the model so that it can be lifted without touching the sides.
Inside the case, support the model properly. Aircraft should rest on their landing gear or on a purpose-made stand that contacts the fuselage at a strong point, not on a propeller or a wingtip. Ship models with wooden hulls and rigging need a cradle that supports the keel along its length. Avoid foam that off-gasses, and avoid adhesives that can migrate. For long-term storage, wrap models in acid-free tissue and keep them in a rigid box, labelled with the kit, scale, and subject.
A glossary helps when buying supplies. Terms such as acrylic, UV filter, acid-free, and off-gassing appear in product descriptions, and knowing what they mean prevents purchases that do more harm than good. Where does a collection go from here?
A collection grows in two directions: more models, or better models. The first is easier, and it is the one that fills shelves with unfinished projects and impulse buys. Neither direction is wrong, but they lead to different rooms.
The practical sequence is simple. Decide the scale and the subject first. Inspect every box before buying, with photographs of the sprues and decals. Build with the display in mind, so that the model can be lifted, supported, and cleaned without stress. Then conserve it with stable light, stable temperature, and a closed case. A finished model that survives twenty years is a better record of the hobby than a shelf of boxes that never left the stash.
