Formats and the arithmetic of the score: matchplay, strokeplay and the card

A golf score is not one number; it is a format’s answer to the question being asked. This page reads the arithmetic the way the ledger reads a catalogue: matchplay against strokeplay as two different ways of counting the same eighteen holes, stableford points computed hole by hole, the WHS handicap with its course rating and slope adjustments, and the scorecard itself read by its par and index columns.

Matchplay against strokeplay
In strokeplay the score is cumulative: every stroke on every hole counts toward the total, and one disaster hole follows the player to the clubhouse. In matchplay the unit of account is the hole itself — won, halved or lost — and a bad hole costs exactly one unit, no more. The difference is not cosmetic. It changes what a conservative decision is worth, when a conceded putt is legal, and what the card is for: in matchplay the card records a state of the match rather than an accumulating total.
The documentary consequence is that a result means nothing without its format. “Won 3 and 2” and “shot 74” are different kinds of statement, and a record that quotes one in the other’s grammar is corrupting the evidence. The ledger equivalent is the difference between a title and a catalogue number: both true, not interchangeable.
Stableford: the score computed hole by hole
Stableford converts each hole into points from the net score — the gross strokes minus the handicap strokes the hole’s index allows. The system exists to make a bad hole survivable: once no points are possible, the ball is picked up and the hole closes without ruining the card. Reading a stableford card means reading two parallel columns, the strokes that were taken and the points they converted into, and the conversion depends entirely on where the handicap strokes fell.
The WHS handicap: rating, slope and the card
The World Handicap System separates three numbers that casual talk merges. The handicap index is the player’s portable measure. The course rating is the course’s difficulty for a scratch player, and the slope rating is how much harder it gets as the player’s level drops. The course handicap — the strokes a player actually receives on the day — is computed from those three, index multiplied by slope over the standard 113, adjusted by the gap between course rating and par. The arithmetic is mechanical; the errors come from quoting an index where a course handicap is meant.
The published method lives with the game’s governing documentation, and the R&A’s rules and handicapping hub is where the current wording is maintained. A handicap quoted without its format is the same documentary failure as a price quoted without its date: possibly accurate, certainly unverifiable.
Reading the card by par and index
The scorecard is a small printed dossier. The par row says what each hole is expected to cost; the stroke index row ranks the holes by where handicap strokes are allocated, so that a player receiving strokes knows on which holes they arrive. Reading the card correctly — par for the course’s expectation, index for the match’s arithmetic, the score columns for what actually happened — is what turns a number at the bottom into a checkable record.

Conceded, dormie and the states of a match
Matchplay carries its own vocabulary of states, and each is a recordable event rather than a turn of phrase. A concession ends a hole without a finishing stroke; a match that is dormie cannot be lost outright on the next hole; the result notation — two up with one to play is written as a state, not a score. These are the formats’ way of saying that a match is a sequence of positions, and the card or the record book has to be able to hold positions, not just totals. A ledger reader will recognise the pattern: the record keeps states and events, not only outcomes.
When the card disagrees with the day
Scorecards get signed, and a signed card is a document with consequences: a wrong lower score stands, a wrong higher one stands too, and the correction window is narrow. The rule exists because the alternative — a score that stays negotiable — is worse for everyone. It is the strictest example in this register of the documentary principle the whole site runs on: at some point the record closes, what it says becomes the fact, and the work of getting it right has to happen before the signature, not after. That is why the card is checked hole by hole, against par and index, while the round is still correctable.
It is also why the formats stay worth teaching side by side rather than as rivals. Matchplay teaches the state of a contest, strokeplay the accumulation of a day, Stableford the repair of a bad hole, and the card teaches what all three share: a score is a claim that someone has to be able to check. The reader who learns the card learns the deeper lesson underneath the formats — that in a good record, every number knows what it is counting and can say so.
